The standard describes how Christmas presents should be allocated to good and bad
children in the run up to Christmas Eve. These presents will then be loaded onto Santa’s

The change removes the requirement to provide at least two oranges to naughty children.

OK - like many people I need to get some toner for a colour printer, in my case a
Lexmark C530DN

What I hadn't anticipated is that it is consistently cheaper to get a new printer
than to get toner. This is madness.

Toner for existing printer circa £370 for 3000 sheets = 12.3 pence per sheet

Lexmark C543DN circa £135 for 2000 sheets = 6.75 pence per sheet

Lexmark C734 circa £375 for 4000 sheets = 9.375 pence per sheet

Lexmark C925de A3 circa 599 for 8500 sheets = 7 pence per sheet

Toner for C925de £721 for £8500 sheets = 8.5 pence per sheet

Black toner for C925de £117 for £8500 sheets = 1.3 pence per sheet

C925de is on its way - should last a year or two. When the toner runs out - buy another!

This project should occupy quite a lot of my time. The idea came in 1986 when I started
collecting model trams from Leeds City. Put simply, I am starting a model tramway,
based on the parade of shops along Street Lane in Roundhay, set in 1938. So far the
table is built. It is hinged against the wall so that it can be folded away when guests
need the room.
Dimensions are 1.2m x 2'6", which reflects the fact that the wood came in metric
and I think in feet and inches.

Under the hood the data is stored in XML files rather than in a formal database.
I wanted to ensure that the hosted data is secure so have moved from using plain text
XML to compressed and encrypted XML. This has one main benefit - I feel comfortable
using an e-mail message with the files attached to back up the data.

This post explains how I did this. The encryption is using DES which is good
enough and symmetric. The DES service provider is used in many functions and
subroutines so I created it as a function. The compression is using the inbuilt
DotNet GZIP compression routine which uses the standard deflate compression.
It seems particularly efficient on XML.

Imports System.Security.Cryptography
Now I have an iPod touch I am very interested to have a wireless connection.
Increasingly I am irritated by the practice of hotels (in particular) to charge not
only for a connection, but for each device. In Brazil I took two laptops and
chose a pay per byte tarriff because a pay per day tarrif would have only worked on
one device.

The iPod motiviated me to find a solution, and I was very surprised to find Microsoft
have provided the answer in Windows 7 for machines with a certified WiFi driver.
In short, any Windows 7 machine (except ones running starter edition) can easily be
turned into a full wireless access point (not just establishing an ad-hoc network).

In this posting, I will describe the manual way of setting this up, and then link
to software to do this for you.

Doing it by hand

The key to this is Microsoft's addition of a Virtual wifi miniport adapter (thanks
to http://bink.nu/news/windows-7-as-an-wifi-accesspoint.aspx for a simple guide).
Step 1 - open a command prompt with administrative rights. This is not simply
open a command promp as an administrator - you need to right click on "Command
Prompt" (usually found in the accessories folder of the start menu) and choose
Run As Administrator.
Step 2 - allow a hosted network with the command

netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=MyNetworkName key=sesamestreet

The ssid and password should be changed
Step 3 - the created network needs to share onward access. I won't explain here
but it is covered in Steven
Bink's article. You need to choose the outbound connection (e.g wired lan,
wireless on the same hardware or a 3G connection)
Step 4 - change the configuration so that the virtual network adapter is limited to
using IP. Again I won't explain here but it is covered in Steven
Bink's article
Step 5 - turn it on. Again in a command prompt with administrative
rights

netsh wlan start hostednetwork

A software utility to help

Now to the software. I am sure there is more, but I chose this OpenSource project:

http://virtualrouter.codeplex.com/

This allows easy setup of the virtual access point and then displays the devices connected.

Some thoughts.
Microsoft have been quite clever - they are able to support connecting devices to
the Windows platform, such as Zune and Windows Mobile 7. They have limited the
functionality to WPA encrypted networks but are ensuring drivers should be able to
support Wi-Fi Direct when it becomes a standard.
<div>
I have a new iPod touch and I have to say I am very impressed. I am not a massive
Apple evangelist and regularly make fun of people with their nice shiny macs costing
twice as much as any PC I would buy, though I did use a mac at college before it became
a mac classic.<br />
So for first thoughts:
<ul>
<li>
It works well as an iPod including playback with my bluetooth headphones but doesn't
support the headphones' control functions and doesn't support the microphone
<br />
</li>
<li>
The keyboard in portrait mode is just a bit too fiddly and I haven't found a way to
view mobile web pages in landscape
<br />
</li>
<li>
The browser works well and I like the fact it doesn't support flash player E-mail
setup for exchange was very good though I would like to be able to set up two exchange
servers<br />
</li>
<li>
How on earth does it do the location services on wifi? Works rediculously well.
<br />
</li>
</ul>
Would I pay an extra &pound;250-&pound;300 for an iPod with camera, GPS, microphone
and 3g. No, but if work offered it as an option I would go for it.
</div>

I would like to describe a rule that I learned long ago from a wise primary care doctor
working on our first electronic health record in Kaiser Permanente in Colorado. His
name was Ed McAuliffe, and he reminded us of his principle often enough that we all
took to calling it &ldquo;McAuliffe&rsquo;s Rule.&rdquo; Whenever we were fretting
about the (often important) flaws in the electronic solution we were considering at
any particular moment, Ed would often say &ldquo;<strong>yes, but isn&rsquo;t this
still better than what we do now?</strong>&rdquo;
</div>
<br />
</blockquote>So often we forget quite how flawed current clinical record management
is.<br />

So at last Leeds United have had a proper match at Elland Road, and I managed to get
to it. I was in the US for the Liverpool Carling Cup match. My cousins
had a facebook discussion which included "you must have been disappointed then".
Well no actually I wasn't. Leeds played exceptionally well against the best
team Harry could put out. They had good control of the midfield and had periods
of the game where they were the better side and in control. Jermaine Defoe scored
a hat trick with one good second half goal, one off his shins in the first half and
one in extra time when our defence was up front attacking to get the second equaliser.
As for Spurs, they could easily go on to win the FA cup. Arsenal, Liverpool
and the team from Stretford are all out of the way (in the case of the Stretford team
thanks to the one United).
It is easy to say it lets United concentrate on winning the third division and avoiding
a play-off trip to Wembley but that ignores the benefits. United have shown
themselves capable of matching Spurs at White Hart Lane, beating Stretford at Old
Trafford and being a credible challenger in any division. The confidence this
should give the team will be essential in gaining that all important promotion to
the second and first divisions.

were a point behind the leaders but still looking good. Name the flags wasn't
our strong point though the guess at South Korea was inspired. Mixing up L and
D in roman numerals (1668 in Roman numerals was the question) was a slip up but in
the end it didn't matter. We came third, 5 points behind the nwinners (Clive,
Alison, Anne). Thanks to Jo, Chris and Nigel for an enjoyable night out.

So coming into today's match nerves were on edge and thoughts were of the "is
it an up or a down". It started off a bit wobbly with Colchester being
quick and hoofing the ball around. Some of the referee's decisions show that
his positioning gave him a very different view to mine. It wasn't that the decisions
seemed to favour one team; they just didn't reflect the match I saw.
A penalty to Leeds - Beckford takes it and scores. Two penalties in the decade
and its only one month old. This settled United down and they went on to score
another Beckford goal after Howson hit the left post from the right side. Howson's
shot, if it had gone in, would have been magnificent.
All in all - steadied the nerves. Bring on Wednesday with a packed Elland Road
entertaining Tottenham Hotspurs of White Hart Lane for the replay of the 4th round
of the FA cup.
Charlton drew, Norwich won. Can't have it all.

everyone get involved in Social Media

My 2p worth - no way! Some people naturaly get their energy from interacting
with other people. Others are very much self-driven. Somehow I can't see
the late J D Salinger being an activist in social media yet he had a profound
impact on our view of teen society.

In his video, he concentrates on the organisations who should get involved in social
media and ignores the people side. In doing so there is a great danger that
we have a social media underclass from the introverted people and therefore a
superior class of extraverts. We need to include the reflectors!

Perhaps this means we need the society around social media to connect to the introverts
- a broker.

I had a delightful experience yesterday as I was cycling home from the station.
As I came to a junction in a local estate I saw a group of four kids, about 7 years
old. The conversation started with them yelling "Bike Bike Bike"

            Bike Bike Bike!
Awww great - its a bike
OK - the last few weeks have been a roller coaster ride for Leeds United. They
have beaten their arch rivals Stretford drawn at Tottenham Hotspur. They have
also just gained one point from a possible 9 in the last three games. Prior
to that they have only lost one league game this season.
So what is going wrong? Motivation, Fatigue, eye off the ball. Who knows.
Simon Grayson has clearly shared his views and is seeking some reflection and improved
performance.

Any ideas folks?

OK - a few days on I have my first thoughts on Facebook. What have I learned?

1. Pixie has an interest in Cystic Fibrosis. (OK I knew that already).
2. My cousin has been offline because of BT incompetence. Only took a week to
resolve so thats not bad
3. A work colleague had a cup of tea. Not exactly as mind-mangling as the Hitch-hiker's
guide nutrimatic machine but probably it tasted of tea. She didn't have cake
(which is unusual).

As an application it is very seductive - it is good at identifying potential "friends".
Clearly my e-mail address is being uploaded to Facebook by loads of associates.
It is also really good at working out potential social networks and members of those
social networks I am in.

I haven't been able to log in using OpenID, which is a pity.

Saw a great piccie of my dad and his brothers I wonder what piccies of me are
on Facebook ...

My friends (cf Facebook Friends) will know that I regard Facebook as (at best) a necessary
evil. I really believe in using virtual communication and connections as well
as face to face or voice to voice and being able to interact with people to discuss
topics of mutual interest (especially where there isn't mutual agreement) is good.
I have just been very wary of Facebook, and its owners/managers.
So why am I prejudiced against Facebook?
Here are some reasons:

Up until recently their privaly policy has been inpenetrable. It is now fairly
reasobable but not particularly desirable. For example it doesn't share data
with advertisers but can use data to include or exclude you from the target audience
(such as all the men born in 1980).

The default is fast and loose with data - the profile is visible to everyone.
This needs actively managing by people with little guidance provided by Facebook.

The next step down from everyone is "friends and 'friends of friends'".
People are actively encouraged to become friends of celebrities. OK - how many
"friends of friends" is that?

Facebook chose to share profiles with Google and its competitors if the default "Everyone"
was kept. Google may aim to do no harm but ...

The Wall (the public view of you) can have all sorts added without you knowing.
I'm not sure I want this sort of unmoderated comment on my life.

Backing off is really difficult - Facebook does not make it easy to close an account.
Until recentlt it wasn't an option. Now they will delete an account in a complex
procedure lasting around a couple of weeks.

My conclusion - I don't trust them, so if you are looking at my locked
down facebook page I apologise it is so sparse. If they had a track record
of being upfront and open I would be less concerned. Equally I don't see friendship
in the facebook black and white way. I have lots of people I attribute qualities
I value and seek in friends to and I value their fellowship, but most aren't
my true friends.
